Mavis Leno, born Mavis Elizabeth Nicholson on September 5, 1946, is an American philanthropist and feminist who has chosen to stay out of the limelight despite being married to late-night talk show host Jay Leno for over 40 years.

While Jay Leno was cracking jokes on national television, Mavis Leno was quietly working behind the scenes, advocating for women’s rights and social justice.

Leno is a leading feminist figure, both in California and internationally. She has been the chair of the Feminist Majority Foundation’s Campaign to Stop Gender Apartheid in Afghanistan since 1997.

In 1999, she and Jay Leno donated $100,000 to the organization to raise awareness about the plight of Afghan women under the Taliban.

Notably, the organization successfully protested the construction of an oil pipeline through Afghanistan, which could have potentially enriched the Taliban.
