BIOGRAPHY

Ilse Virginia Salas Martínez, better known as Ilse Salas , is a Mexican actress, born on August 26, 1981 in Mexico. Ilse comes from a family that she lovingly describes as “dysfunctional but very loving,” as her parents have been divorced for as long as she can remember. However, this has not in any way altered her development as a person and actress. She studied theater at the Contemporary Theater Forum of director Ludwik Margules and her first job in the industry was as host of the children’s bar on Channel 11, where she met Alonso Ruizpalacios, who would become her partner and with whom she made one of the best Mexican films of the last decade: Güeros (2014).

After leaving Canal 11, Ilse embarked on the path of television with Locas de amor (2010), one of the first series made by Televisa. In this production she shared credits with Cecilia Suárez, Daniel Giménez Cacho and Ximena Ayala. That same year, Ilse made her film debut with the film, Hidalgo. The untold story, and she returned to the small screen for a brief appearance in the Mujeres Assassinas television series , in the second episode of the third season. The series enjoyed incredible success, since within the cast there were several popular stars of the moment such as Dulce María, Isela Vega, Adriana Fonseca, María Rojo, Verónica Castro, Cecilia Suárez and more.

Between güeros and girls bien

Although Ilse’s career never stagnated, there were two projects that made her one of the most celebrated and versatile actresses of the last decade: Güeros ( 2014 ), by Alonso Ruizpalacios, and Las girls bien (2018 ), by Alejandra Márquez Abella. The first shows the search that Federico, alias Sombra, and Tomás embark on to find the exact location of Epigmenio Cruz, a musician who now goes unnoticed by new generations. The film positioned Ruizpalacios as one of the most promising Mexican filmmakers in the industry, while the cast’s performances were applauded by both critics and the public. The second was one of the most internationally recognized Mexican films in 2018, whose objective, both on and off the set, was to launch a feminist statement and start a conversation about gender awareness in Mexico.

Regarding Güeros , Ilse states that it took her to travel the world (the film was presented at various international festivals, being awarded at the Berlinale): “it connected me with many people from other places and with whom I am now starting to work.” That same year she participated in the biographical film of Cantinflas, one of the most important characters in Mexican culture, who was personified by a not yet so popular Óscar Jaenada. Subsequently, came You Will Know What to Do With Me , a film by Katina Medina Mora, with whom Ilse claims to have made an excellent collaboration.

He has alternated his career on the small screen and in film by participating in notable projects in both industries: the series Sr. Ávila and El Hotel de los secretos , as well as the film You are killing Susana (2016), an adaptation of a book by José Agustín who was a summit in Mexican literature.

2014 was a crucial year for Salas’ career, where she reaped the first fruits of her work and demonstrated the caliber of her as an actress. However, in 2018 she had international critics at her feet with the role of an upper-class woman, trapped in the terrible consequences of the Mexican economic crisis of 1982: Sofía in Girls Well . The film was presented in most of the venues on the international film festival circuit and its director, Alejandra Márquez Abella, was positioned on the lists of directors to follow .

Ilse had been nominated for the Ariel Award in the category of Best Actress for her work in Güeros , but it was not until The Good Girls that she won the statuette. “I was very excited [to receive the Ariel] because it is given to you by your colleagues. I admire my colleagues and my industry so much that the fact that they recognize my work is incredible.” In addition to the obvious rewards that the film left her, what Ilse values most is the friendship that began with her co-stars Cassandra Ciangherotti, Johanna Murillo and Paulina Gaitán: “it worked so well that we continued working together. It was the beginning of a long career that we will have meetings.”

Ilse Salas has several future projects planned, including a film that she recorded with Abner Benaim ( Yo no me nombre Rubén Blades , 2018) in Panama, for which they sought her out directly after having seen her performance in The Girls Well ; The production will tentatively be titled Plaza Catedral . Likewise, Ilse is starting a creative television project with Alejandra Márquez Abella, Cassandra Ciangherotti and Johanna Murillo about which not much information has been revealed.
