Nicknamed Smoke, Anthony Wayne Stewart is an American semi-retired professional stock car racing driver and current owner of the NASCAR team. He is a three-time drivers’ champion in the NASCAR Cup Series, winning championships in 2002, 2005 and 2011. He has won the NASCAR Cup titles as a team owner with himself in 2011 and with Kevin Harvick as drivers in 2014. Stewart has won titles in Indy, Midget, Sprint and USAC Silver Crown cars throughout his racing career. He is the first driver in history to win an IndyCar and NASCAR championship.

Stewart intended to move to the Winston Cup Series in 1997 driving for Ranier-Walsh Racing after working with the team part-time during the 1996 NASCAR Busch Series season. But, when Stewart realized he wasn’t ready to transfer, the deal fell through.
After a 20-year driving career in NASCAR, the last 18 of which were spent in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series, Stewart retired after the 2016 season from his NASCAR driving duties to focus on his co-ownership of Stewart. -Haas Racing (SHR) with industrialist Gene Haas, and to compete in the type of open-wheel dirt racing where his path to NASCAR began.
